You and your pet are inseparable, right?
If you're one of the many pet owners who can't bear to abandon their dog, cat, or other type of pet, you'll be glad to know that the tendency to take your furry friend on vacation is on the rise. In fact, many choose to include pets in their travel plans.
But like all good things, taking your pet on a trip can go wrong if you don't plan things right.
Travel insurance people know about planning. That's why we've put together 6 important tips to help you and your pet enjoy the holiday together as a team, without the risk of accident.
So we start with smart guidelines any seasoned traveler with a pet should review and follow.
Six Basic Things to Do Before Traveling with a Pet
• To go on a road trip: Keep your dog or cat in a special carrier designed for travel. If that doesn't work, make sure your pet's movement is limited to the backseat. That way, your concentration can't distract you when you should just focus on driving, following road signs, and getting to your destination safely. Remember to take frequent rest breaks where you and your pet can stretch, exercise and relax. Follow the rule about vehicles: Never leave a child or pet alone inside because cars can quickly overheat, turning into a death trap - a tragedy vehicle.
• Question all rules about taking your pet with you when traveling by plane. It's best to have your pet with you in the cabin while on the plane, but if that's not an option, choose a direct flight with less risk than a connecting flight. Always have a picture of your pet with you as visual proof of identity.
• Arrange all required identification documents. If you can microchip your pet, this is an excellent way to verify identity. Make sure your pet has up-to-date contact information, including your mobile phone number, on the label. And it's a good idea to have your pet's vaccinations and medical records on hand.
• Do not forget to put all necessary belongings of your pet in your luggage. This should include toys of choice, a sleeping pad and snacks.
• The hospitality industry has become more and more pet friendly, so plan to stay at a hotel that welcomes you and your pet. You can also find vacation home owners who will be happy to rent to pet owners, and home-sharing companies that will take care of your pet needs. Make sure to bring your pet with you, but you won't encounter any bumps on the way.
• There is no point in bringing your pet on vacation to sit in a hotel room. Make sure all your entertainment is pet-friendly and research restaurants and entertainment venues to allow your pet access.
• Talk to an experienced professional insurance agent about the best travel insurance for you and your pet.
